This editorial policy explains how the FancyTextTool editorial team builds and checks its symbol pages: where each character’s name and code point come from, what has and has not been tested, how a result such as “works”, “blocked” or “shows as a box” is recorded, and how changes are dated.
How each symbol is checked
- Identity: every single character is looked up in the Unicode Character Database (version 17.0 at the time of writing) for its official name, code point and the Unicode version that added it. That is what the tables on each page show.
- Copy behaviour: each copy button copies the exact characters shown, byte for byte, including invisible joiners and variation selectors. We do not swap, normalise or simplify characters.
- Content filter: combos taken from community sources are screened for offensive words (including words hidden in styled letters), religious or political slogans, and personal names before they are listed.
Device tests: how results are recorded
Whether a symbol displays depends on the device and app that show it. When we test a symbol on a device, we record four things next to it: the device and operating system version, the app and its version, the date, and one of three results — works (shows correctly), shows as a box (the device lacks a font for it) or blocked (the app refuses or removes it).
Until a symbol has been tested that way, its page says “Not yet checked” rather than guessing. As of the date below, the device column on every page reads “Not yet checked”: no device results have been published yet, and we will not publish any that were not actually measured.
Rules of apps and games
When a page states an app’s rule — for example that an Instagram username allows only letters, numbers, dots and underscores — it is the rule the app publishes, not a test result. Rules that we could not confirm are marked “Not checked”.
Re-checking pages
Every tray shows a “Last checked” date. When Unicode publishes a new version, when an app changes its name rules, or when a reader reports a problem through the contact form, the page is checked again and its date is updated. Dates are only changed when the content really changes.

Editorial policy questions
Who writes and checks the pages?
The FancyTextTool editorial team, based in Hanoi, Vietnam. See the About page for who runs the site.
Why does a page say “Not yet checked”?
Because we have not tested that symbol on that device yet. We prefer an honest “not yet” to a result nobody measured.
How do I report a symbol that does not work?
Send the page link, the symbol, your device and the app through the contact form under “Broken symbol”. Confirmed reports are recorded with the date. Back to FancyTextTool.
