Find a symbol by shape

Most people know the shape they want, not its name. Start from the shape, then open its collection for every variant: hearts and stars for decoration, arrows and ticks for lists and instructions, brackets for framing a name, and currency and maths signs for documents. The search box at the top of this page filters every symbol here by name — try “black”, “circle” or “note”.
Symbols that work everywhere
Older symbols are the safest. These have been in Unicode since version 1.1 (1993) and show on practically every phone, computer and app:
| Symbol | Unicode name | Code point | HTML entity | Added in |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ♥ | Black Heart Suit | U+2665 | ♥ | Unicode 1.1 |
| ★ | Black Star | U+2605 | ★ | Unicode 1.1 |
| → | Rightwards Arrow | U+2192 | → | Unicode 1.1 |
| ✓ | Check Mark | U+2713 | ✓ | Unicode 1.1 |
| ♪ | Eighth Note | U+266A | ♪ | Unicode 1.1 |
| ☀ | Black Sun With Rays | U+2600 | ☀ | Unicode 1.1 |
| € | Euro Sign | U+20AC | € | Unicode 2.1 |
| ± | Plus-minus Sign | U+00B1 | ± | Unicode 1.1 |
Newer additions — many emoji, the Egyptian hieroglyphs used in some aesthetic combos, rare scripts — are the ones that turn into empty boxes on older devices.
How to copy a symbol on a phone

- Tap the symbol on this page — it is copied straight away and a small “Copied” note appears.
- Open the app and press and hold where you want the symbol.
- Choose Paste. Your last copies stay in the “Recently copied” strip on this device for 90 days.
Symbol versus emoji
A symbol such as ♥ or ★ is text: it takes the colour and size of the words around it. An emoji such as ❤️ or ⭐ is drawn by your device as a small colour picture, so it looks different on iPhone, Android and Windows. Some characters can be both — the emoji collection explains the switch.
Why a symbol shows as a box
An empty box (sometimes called a missing-glyph box) means the device has no font that contains that character. The symbol is still there and copies correctly; the reader just cannot see it. Choosing symbols from the “works everywhere” list above avoids the problem for important text.

Questions
Are these symbols free to use?
Yes. They are standard Unicode characters, so anyone can copy and paste them anywhere — personal or commercial — without any licence.
Do I need to install a font?
No. The symbols use the fonts already on your device. That is also why a very rare symbol may show as a box on an older phone.
What is FancyTextTool?
FancyTextTool is a free copy-and-paste library of symbols, emoji and styled letters, with each character’s official name and code shown so you know exactly what you are pasting.
