Star symbols are Unicode characters shaped like stars — ★ ☆ ✦ ✧ ✩ ✪ and dozens more — and they sit beside the geometric shapes ■ □ ● ○ ▲ △ ◆ ◇. Every one here shows its code point; tap a shape once to copy it into a bio, a rating, a document or a game name.

Filled versus outline shapes
Almost every shape exists twice: once filled and once as an outline. Unicode names give it away — BLACK in a name means filled and WHITE means outline, whatever colour your screen shows. ★ is BLACK STAR and ☆ is WHITE STAR; ■ is BLACK SQUARE and □ is WHITE SQUARE.

Watch out for one exception: ⭐ is called WHITE MEDIUM STAR, yet every phone draws it as a yellow emoji. Emoji colours come from the emoji font, not from the name.

Little stars: ⋆ ˚ ✦ and friends
The tiny stars in aesthetic bios are mostly not star symbols at all. ⋆ is STAR OPERATOR, a maths sign; ˚ is RING ABOVE, an accent mark; ⭒ is WHITE SMALL STAR and ✧ WHITE FOUR POINTED STAR. Mixed with dots (. ₊ ‧), they make the little sparkle trails such as ⋆。°✩ and ✧˚ ⋆。˚.

Stars for bios and names
Type a name or a word and it is framed with stars in sixteen styles. Bold, italic and script letters are a font effect: the letters are replaced with maths alphanumeric characters, so bios and display names accept them while some username fields refuse them.
Star ratings: 3, 4 and 5 stars
A star rating is just a row of filled and outline stars: ★★★★☆ is four out of five. Copy a ready-made row from the tray, or build your own — filled ★ for the score, outline ☆ for the rest. Avoid ⭐ for half scores: emoji have no half star, while ½ next to text stars reads clearly.
Star ratings in Excel and Google Sheets
Spreadsheets can draw the stars for you. If cell A2 holds a score from 0 to 5, this formula shows it as stars in both Excel and Google Sheets: =REPT("★",A2)&REPT("☆",5-A2). Geometric shapes work the same way for progress bars, for example =REPT("■",A2)&REPT("□",10-A2) for a score out of ten.
Line and divider characters
Dividers are lines made of box-drawing characters (─ ━ ═ ┈), often with a star in the middle, used to split a bio, a server rules list or a long post. Paste one on a line of its own and shorten it by deleting a few line characters if it wraps.

| ⎯ | Horizontal Line Extension | U+23AF | ⎯ | Unicode 3.2 |
| ﹏ | Wavy Low Line | U+FE4F | ﹏ | Unicode 1.1 |
Plain lines without stars, plus wavy and dotted ones, are in the line symbols tray.
More star and shape trays
This page is the hub for stars and shapes on FancyTextTool. These trays go deeper into one shape or one use:
- Triangle symbols — every pointing direction and size.
- Line symbols — straight, double, dotted and wavy lines.
- Cat symbols ᓚᘏᗢ — cat faces, often paired with stars.
- Zzz symbols — sleepy z letters with moons and stars.
Where star symbols show correctly
Apps only pass the characters along; the device of each reader draws them. The classic ★ ☆ ■ □ ● ○ ▲ △ ◆ ◇ have been in Unicode since version 1.1 (1993) and show almost everywhere. The heavy stars from the Geometric Shapes Extended block (🟊 🟌 🟏, Unicode 7.0) are the ones most likely to show as a box.

Questions about star symbols
What is the star symbol called?
The standard filled star ★ is called BLACK STAR (U+2605) and the outline ☆ is WHITE STAR (U+2606). The yellow emoji ⭐ is a separate character, WHITE MEDIUM STAR (U+2B50).
How do I type a star symbol on my keyboard?
In Microsoft Word, type 2605 and press Alt + X to turn it into ★. On a Mac, press Control + Command + Space and search “star”. On Windows 10 and 11, the emoji panel (Windows key + full stop) has ⭐ and a Symbols tab. Everywhere else, copy from the tray above.
Is ⭐ the same as ★?
No. ⭐ is an emoji that your phone draws as a yellow picture; ★ is a text character that takes the colour of the text around it. They also sort and search as different characters.
