Heart symbols are text characters shaped like a heart — ♥ ♡ ❤ ❥ ❣ ❦ — together with letters that look like hearts, such as ღ, and the coloured heart emoji. Every heart below copies in one tap and shows its Unicode name and code, so you know whether you are pasting text or an emoji.

Your name with hearts
Type a name to see it framed by text hearts in sixteen ways; tap one to copy. Bold, italic and script letters are maths alphanumeric characters, best for bios and display names.
Which heart symbol is which
The text hearts come from two old sets: the playing-card suits (♥ ♡) and the Dingbats printer ornaments (❤ ❥ ❣ ❦ ❧). In Unicode names “black” means filled and “white” means outline, so ♥ is BLACK HEART SUIT and ♡ is WHITE HEART SUIT. ❤ is the only one that can also turn into the red emoji ❤️.

Letters that look like hearts
Some popular “hearts” are letters or digits from other writing systems. They copy as text and keep your colour, which is why people use them in names:
| Symbol | Unicode name | Code point | HTML entity | Added in |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ღ | Georgian Letter Ghan (Georgian letter) | U+10E6 | ღ | Unicode 1.1 |
| დ | Georgian Letter Don (Georgian letter) | U+10D3 | დ | Unicode 1.1 |
| ლ | Georgian Letter Las (Georgian letter) | U+10DA | ლ | Unicode 1.1 |
| ۵ | Extended Arabic-indic Digit Five (digit five in Persian and Urdu) | U+06F5 | ۵ | Unicode 1.1 |
| ও | Bengali Letter O (Bengali letter) | U+0993 | ও | Unicode 1.1 |
| ꨄ | Cham Letter Ai (Cham letter) | U+AA04 | ꨄ | Unicode 5.1 |
| 𑣲 | Warang Citi Number Ninety (Warang Citi number 90) | U+118F2 | 𑣲 | Unicode 7.0 |
Because they are real letters, a few apps that limit names to certain scripts may reject them, and readers who know those languages will see a letter, not a heart.
Heart emoji colours and when they arrived
Coloured hearts were added in waves, which is why a newer colour can show as a box on an old phone: yellow, green, blue and purple came with Unicode 6.0 in 2010, black 🖤 in 2016, orange 🧡 in 2017, brown 🤎 and white 🤍 in 2019, and pink 🩷, light blue 🩵 and grey 🩶 in 2022.

Hearts made from symbols

A heart drawn from heart symbols is plain text across several lines, so it pastes into a message or a document without an image. It looks right only in a monospaced font or a chat that keeps spaces; in some apps the lines shift. The three in the tray use ♥, ♡ and ❤.
How to type a heart symbol
- Windows: hold Alt and type 3 on the number pad for ♥ (it works in most programs).
- Microsoft Word: type
2665then press Alt + X for ♥, or2661then Alt + X for ♡. - Mac: Control + Command + Space opens Character Viewer; search “heart”.
- Phone: the emoji keyboard has the coloured hearts; for text hearts such as ♡ and ❥, copy them from this page.
- HTML:
♥gives ♥, and♡gives ♡.
Hearts that work everywhere
♥ ♡ ❤ ❥ ❣ ❦ ❧ have been in Unicode since version 1.1 (1993) and display on practically every device. The emoji colours added after 2019 and rare-script look-alikes such as 𑣲 are the hearts most likely to show as a box for some readers.
