Cat Symbols ᓚᘏᗢ — Copy & Paste

Cat symbols are text characters that look like cats: the classic ᓚᘏᗢ, kaomoji faces such as ≽^•⩊•^≼ and ฅ^•ﻌ•^ฅ, paw prints and cat emoji like 🐈 and 😺. All of them are Unicode text, so one tap copies a cat and it pastes into bios, chats and game names.

Cat name decorations — try it with a name

Type your name, your cat’s name or a username and every frame below updates; tap one to copy it. Bold, italic and script letters are a font effect — the letters are swapped for mathematical alphanumeric characters, so some games and username fields reject them while bios and display names accept them.

What ᓚᘏᗢ is made of

ᓚᘏᗢ is not a picture or a special font. It is three letters from the Unified Canadian Aboriginal Syllabics block, added in Unicode 3.0 in 1999 for writing Cree, Inuktitut and Carrier. Put side by side, their shapes happen to read as a cat lying down: ᓚ is the head, ᘏ the curled body and ᗢ the tail with two pointed ears turned backwards.

The ᓚᘏᗢ cat symbol split into three Canadian Syllabics letters U+14DA, U+160F and U+15E2

Because these are real letters, the cat copies as three ordinary characters and keeps its shape anywhere a font has the syllabics block. Flip the order to ᗢᘏᓗ and the cat faces the other way — ᓗ (CANADIAN SYLLABICS LO) is the mirror of ᓚ. The kaomoji cats work the same way: each face is borrowed letters and maths signs that look like ears, eyes and a mouth.

Filled versus outline cat shapes

Cat characters come in two looks. The outline cats — ᓚᘏᗢ, 𓃠 and every kaomoji — are text: they take the colour of the words around them and look the same weight as your font. The filled cats are emoji such as 🐈 and 😺: your phone or computer swaps them for a small colour picture, so the same character looks slightly different on an iPhone, a Samsung phone and Windows.

The black cat 🐈‍⬛ is a special case: it is 🐈 + an invisible zero width joiner + ⬛. Phones that know the Emoji 13.0 sequence (2020) draw one black cat; older ones show a cat next to a black square. Copy it whole from the tray — deleting one part breaks it.

Cat symbols with stars for bios

Stars and sparkles are the most common partners for a cat in a profile bio. These combinations use only text characters, so they keep the same look in the bio field of Instagram (150 characters) and TikTok (80 characters). Each one is short enough to sit next to your name.

Want more star shapes to mix in? The star symbols tray has every star and sparkle on its own, with codes.

Cat line and divider characters

A divider is a line of characters that separates parts of a bio, a Discord server rule list or a long post. These cat dividers mix ᓚᘏᗢ, paws and box-drawing lines (─, ┈); paste them on a line of their own.

If a line looks too long on a phone, delete a few ─ or ┈ characters from the middle — they are plain characters and shorten without breaking the cat.

Where cat symbols show correctly

Whether a cat appears depends on the fonts installed on the device that shows it, not on the app. Instagram, Discord or WhatsApp only pass the characters along; the phone or computer of each reader has to draw them. Here is which font normally covers each kind of cat.

If a reader sees an empty box instead of a cat, their device lacks that font. The safest picks for everyone are ᓚᘏᗢ and the simple faces made of ^ • and ⩊; rarer letters such as ᨐ (Buginese) or 𐰁 (Old Turkic) are the first to go missing on older phones.

Questions about cat symbols

Is ᓚᘏᗢ an emoji?

No. ᓚᘏᗢ is three Canadian Syllabics letters, so it is plain text, not an emoji. That is why it stays the same colour as your writing and works in places that block emoji. The cat emoji are separate characters such as 🐈 (U+1F408) and 🐱 (U+1F431).

Why does my cat symbol show as a box?

The device showing it has no font for one of the characters. Copying again will not fix it on that device. Choose a cat built from common characters, such as ≽^•⩊•^≼ or ᓚᘏᗢ, which most phones and computers can draw.

Can I use cat symbols in Excel or Google Sheets?

Yes. Paste a cat into a cell like any text; it is stored as normal characters and can be sorted or searched. If a cell shows a box, switch the cell to a font that covers the character, such as Euphemia on Windows for ᓚᘏᗢ.

Can I type ᓚᘏᗢ without copying it?

On a computer you can enter it by code point: on a Mac with the Unicode Hex Input keyboard hold Option and type 14DA, then 160F, then 15E2. In a web page or HTML email use the entities ᓚᘏᗢ. On a phone, copying from the tray above is the quickest way.

This cat tray is part of FancyTextTool, a library of copy-and-paste symbols. Cats sit with the other symbol collections, next to the heart symbols that most cat faces are paired with.
